TEACHING
Everyone is born with a vibrant voice capable of conveying a wide spectrum of emotions and nuanced thoughts. Over time, many people lose touch with this vocal liveliness. The joyful whoops, squeals, giggles and shouts of our youngest selves are dulled into
the flattened voices of adulthood.
I specialize in helping individuals unlock their naturally expressive speaking voice.
I offer ways to enhance physical ease, expand expressive range, and strengthen presence.
With over thirty years of teaching experience in colleges, universities (including North Carolina School of the Arts, Sarah Lawrence, and West Virginia University), acting studios (such as Michel Chekhov Acting Studio and Terry Knickerbocker Studio), and private sessions, I am recognized for my warmth and playful teaching style.
I am a Designated Linklater Teacher, holding an MFA in Acting from UCSD, a BA from Yale, and a graduate of the Voice Studies program at Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
I have successfully coached actors, lawyers, business professionals, writers, and individuals seeking greater confidence and dynamism in public speaking. My methods consistently help clients achieve a freer, more enjoyable voice.
I have a particular interest in the speaking of heightened text -- poems, plays, religious texts and often offer workshops using this material. There can be real joy and pleasure in giving ourselves over to the words of our poets.
CLIENT FEEDBACK
“After just two sessions, I felt much more confident giving my speech.”
“I have never liked my voice! Kate helped me find real enjoyment in presenting my short stories publicly.”
“Kate’s understanding of breath and anatomy—shared while we were both on all fours!—helped me source my
voice deeper in my body. She’s fun to work with, honest about the challenges of performing, and resourceful when
it comes to troubleshooting!”
